The B-25 Mitchells – Florida International Air Show

The year we had three B-25 Mitchells on hand.  Panchito, Barbie III and Killer Bee.  All three were on static display and were hosting three of the remaining five Doolittle Raiders.  Panchito was it’s normal gorgeous self in shining aluminum, Killer Bee was decked out in Camo looking for a trip to North Africa and Barbie III was showing off her 75mm cannon and some 50 calibre inverted cleavage on static display.

Unfortunately, the show was pretty busy with the Doolittle Raiders so shots of the static aircraft were difficult.  Panchito and Killer Bee were moved to the south ramp prior to the ground attack demonstration.  They can be seen together in the image at the top of this entry.  I thought I wouldn’t see Barbie III in flight but, Monday morning, I heard the engines and got a distant shot of her being escorted out of town by a T6 also decked out for ground attack.

I managed to catch one shot of the front of Killer Bee showing a more conventional gun layout and the cockpit after landing.

My favorite shot of Killer Bee though was on climbout.  Unfortunately, the nose art was only on the port side.

Panchito was, as usual, lookin’ good on the simulated attack runs and on the  ground.

Heritage Flight – Florida International Airshow

One of the real crowd pleasers at any airshow is the Heritage Flight.  In these flights an older warbird leads a formation of modern combat aircraft from the various USAF flight demonstration teams.  This year we had a fourship formation with a P-51 Mustang leading an F-22 Raptor, F-16 Fighting Falcon and an A-10 Thunderbolt II.  OK, I like Viper and Warthog better myself but, since the link above is to the Air Combat Command site I thought I would let the bureacrats win one.

Flying this kind of formation isn’t easy.  Each aircraft has it’s own characteristics and the pilots train for quite a while before acceptance into the program.  In fact, Air Combat Command has a training program specifically for the Heritage Flights.

Here are a couple of other shots from the flight.  The first was caught as the flight was breaking formation.   In the second, the Raptor driver seems to be making an adjustment.

After several diamond flybys, the aircraft departed in a line formation.

F4U Corsair – Florida International Airshow

They had one of my favorite warbirds at the Airshow this year.  The F4U Corsair.  It was on static display and flew with the B-25s Panchito and Killer Bee in the simulated ground attack runs.

The shooting was tough since the wind meant using a slightly different angle of approach than other  years and that affected the  sun angle on passing shots.  Here are a couple more of the F4U.  The first shows the distinctive wing shape of the Corsair and the other the pilot before take off.  Just click for a larger view.

The aircraft has it’s own website at KoreanWarHero.com

Heavy Metal – Florida International Air Show

This weekend, the Florida International Air Show rolls into town.  I went over to the airport today to see what might be going on that could be worth photographing.  As soon as I got there, I noticed an old DC-7B in Eastern Airlines livery doing a  visual check along the runway before making a landing.  That gave me just enough time to get to one of my favorite spots to get this shot.

Once it landed, I heard jet engines spooling up and looked down the taxiway to see the Heavy Metal Jet Team rolling down to take off.  Looks like their website isn’t up to date because I didn’t see the T-33 that is listed as one of their aircraft.  Instead, a new Aero L-39 showed up in a non-standard paint job.

This one ran solo passes while another 4 L-39s did formation work.  At the end, all formed up with the black one in the lead.  Here are a couple of the formations.

I stuck around until they ended the practice and noticed one of the local fliers looking pretty hopeful as one of them landed.  Fortunately, he was disappointed by a safe landing.

Another trip to Venice Rookery

It was time to go to Sarasota to bring back a couple of pictures that had been on display at the Senior Friendship Center as part of the Sarasota Camera Club contest.  On the way back we made another stop at the Venice Rookery.  After all the discussion of the ‘destruction’ as the Brazilian Pepper was removed, I managed to find a bright spot.

The rookery has always been considered a morning shoot because of the sun direction and the inability to see from the far shore due to the shrubbery.  This isn’t true now.  You get a view of the rookery island from all directions.  With a bit of care watching the background you can get shots all around the pond in the direction of the island.  Here is a worst case though.

This was taken with the 10.5mm fisheye just for fun.

Still, there was courting and breeding activity on the island.

Walking around the pond, the oaks have been planted and are being tended.  Just another  ten years or so and they’ll be in great shape.  Most of the shore is now large mulch from the deforestation project.  It isn’t all bad though.  The snags in the water on the far side of the pond are now easily accessible for photography and are being used as perches by the anhinga and cormorants.   This makes them very accessible for photography and makes the rookery a good place for an afternoon shoot as well.

Whenever I’m at the rookery, I take the time to have a look to see what is happening on the other side of the road.  Since the Brazilian Pepper has been removed, there seems to be more feeding activity on that side.  Today I found a Great Egret who had managed to get hold of a small Florida Softshell Turtle and a small Alligator.

so, it’s still a great place to go shooting for a while and will only get better as time goes by.

Arcadia All Florida Championship Rodeo

Today (March 12) was fun.  I went a few miles up the road to Arcadia for the professional rodeo that is running this weekend.  Yes, it was my first time at the rodeo although, I had shot a lot of equestrian stuff with the Punta Gorda Horsemans Association here in town.  I skipped the shootout show and found a good spot at the end of the arena with the sun at my back.  I was shooting the D300 with my 70-300mm VR lens.  It was a great day.  I took hundreds of pictures and it will take a while to sort through by event but, here are a few teasers.  Just click on the picture for a larger image.

The events were certainly exciting but, I found the work of the arena crew just as interesting.  They had to round up and corral all of the excited bulls and horses after each run.  That was sometimes more interesting than an 8 second bull ride, or less.

The Rattlebox Flower and Moth

Many of the Florida wildflowers are what I call pea-like.  Their flowers and seed pods are similar the familiar green pea.  While I was at Boca Grande, I noticed this healthy one along the grade to the Fishing Pier.  These are of the Genus Crotalaria which comes from the greek for castanet.  Quite appropriate finding it near a fishing pier.

you can see the pretty yellow flower in the picture.  The rattleboxes or seed pods are at the lower left.  At this dry stage, the seeds have seperated and they rattle quite nicely in the breeze.  This plant is a host plant for the Rattlebox Moth Utetheisa ornatrix which is also called the Bella Moth.  Here are a couple of shots of it on another plant.

In spite of their bright colors, these fold their wings tightly and aren’t easily noticed when on more colorful flowers.  In flight, you will see them as a flash of pink in the undergrowth.

There is one other rattling thing in Florida,  but, it’s not a Crotalaria, it’s a Crotalus adamanteus or Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.  While they are pretty to some, they deserve a wider berth.  Here are pictures of the front and back of one.

Remember, Florida is not a petting zoo.

A few birds from Boca Grande

Boca Grande is a small resort village on the south end of Gasparilla Island.  The island is one of the gulf coast barrier islands and Boca Grande Pass is the place where Charlotte Harbor meets the Gulf of Mexico.   Despite it’s resort and residential nature, it is home to a lot of wildlife.  One of the most conspicuous species of bird is the Osprey.    But obviously, this one is having a bad hair feather day and isn’t quite ready to pose.

So, while the Osprey’s preen for their pictures, let’s look at a few other birds.

Shortly after entering the island via the $5 entrance gate and causeway you will find a small shopping center.  Immediately after this, you will see a small sign for the Boca Grande fishing pier on the left.  This is actually a railway grade that was used to haul phosphate and other cargo to the dock near Boca Grande pass.  The fising pier is a great place to find Pelicans, Gulls, Cormorants, Anhiga and other fishing birds.  Here are a few.

The best place to find Ospreys though is at the other end of the island near the Boca Grande Lighthouse at the pass.

While the lighthouse is worthy of a visit in it’s own right, I usually just keep heading across the dunes toward the abandoned phosphate docks.  Go beyond them and you find yourself in prime Osprey country.  In fact, there is a very visible nest which hangs over the shoreline and now contains a baby osprey.  A few more weeks and it will be flying.

Here are a few more shots of ospreys.  In the first two, you can see there are divergent views in the Osprey fishing community regarding the proper method for carrying a fish.  This is undoubtedly a topic of heated discussion in osprey bars after the days catch.

Clearly the osprey on the left prefers the horizontal ‘surfboard’  carry whilst the one on the right prefers the natural upright position.  Either way, the result is the same.

and once the catching bird is through feeding, it carries the leftovers to the nest for baby.

Here are a few more bird shots from around the island.

Doggy fun at Laishley Park

As a part of the Punta Gorda Barbecue Festival we had a dockdogs competition run by Sun Coast Dockdogs.  In these competitions, dogs run down an ‘dock’ and jumped into a four foot deep pool for distance.  It was open to a number of classes so there were large and small dogs competing.  Another event was a time to retrieve where the target was placed at the end of the pool and the dogs were timed.  I’m not sure who the winners were but,  boy, did everybody look like they were having fun.

The above were all taken with the D300 and 18-105mm Nikkor lens.

I think that Red-bellied Woodpecker followed me home

At least, it sure looks that way.  After finding the Red-belly across town I came home to hear one calling out his territory right on our cul-de-sac.  The first place I saw him was up in the palm tree in front of my house.  Then, he went for the highest clear view he could find to size up the neighborhood.  I guess he liked it because he started chasing off all the other woodpeckers he could see.  Unfortunately, most of them turned out to be reflections in our windows.  This picture was actually taken as he threatened the evil intruder in our bronze reflective double glazed door.

Unfortunately, most of them turned out to be reflections in our windows.  this picture was actually taken as he threatened the evil intruder in our bronze reflective double glazed door.  The golden hour of sunset was added to the bronze to account for the unusual coloring.  I was close enough to use the 105mm f2.8 VR Micro-Nikkor.

Of course, ours wasn’t the only house visited in the close.  He seemed quite enamored of his reflection in a neighbors house which has a higher roof than ours.  In fact, he liked it so much that he decided to move in.  He pecked a hole in a styrofoam faux beam at the soffet and felt quite proud of himself.

So, that’s our new neighbor.  The folks with the faux beam aren’t quite as amused as I am so, I expect the woodpecker will be moved on soon but, it makes for an interesting event for a small town. 🙂
