Green Lacewing (Chrysopidae) Eggs

Green Lacewings (Chrysopidae) are interesting little bugs.  They are generally green but, some can be brown as they get older.  The larvae eat aphids, as do some adults, but generally they eat pollen and liquids.  They are called Lacewings because their wings are very clear as you can see in this picture.

What I find neat about them compared to other bugs is that they lay their eggs in a spiral pattern.  These were taken on a mango on a tree in my backyard.  You can see them a bit better if you click on the picture to see a larger version.

In addition to the pattern they are laid in.  Take a look at the stalk that supports the egg.  The first thing this does is lift the egg above the surface that it is laid on.  That helps avoid egg eating predators like ants.  But, there is a second level of passive defense there.  Each stalk has drops of an oily secretion that is distasteful to other bugs.  But, the survival instinct goes a bit further.  The larvae of the lacewing pick up materials to adorn itself so that it looks like anything but a bug.  Here is one that has covered itself with debris that doesn’t look anything like a bug.  You have to look closely to see the feet clinging to the branch.  If this one hadn’t been moving, I would have assumed it was just some dead plant material.

So, survival to breed again is the imperative in this species.

Inside the thistle

I already posted one image for the Inside challenge but, I think this one might qualify as well.  Instead of what is naturally inside, these are bugs which work their way inside thistles.  The bee is obvious, the brown bug is a blister beetle and I don’t know what the orange and black one is.

The bee of course is looking for nectar, the blister beetle eats the petals and the orange and black one has sucking mouth parts for drawing on the sap of the plant. But, speaking of thistles, the bottom and the unopened flower has it’s own geometric beauty.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

This picture was taken in Fredericksburg VA. It’s an old town and this shot was down a service corridor which opened into entrances to apartments subdivided from the large old building.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreaming

This weeks topic is dreaming and the request was for long exposures.  But, I find rainy days the time for contemplation and daydreaming.

This one was taken through a rainy kitchen window while visiting in Ireland. The soft focus here is not long exposure but because of depth of field. Focussing on the window left the details of the landscape evident but obscured.

Nikon P7100 Picture Controls -Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Mono

The Nikon P7100 offers 4 picture modes which deal with how the jpeg image will be stored.  The default position is Standard and the manual recommends Neutral if you plan to process raw files.  Vivid makes the colors more intense by increasing saturation and also increases in-camera sharpness processing.  Mono, of course just produces a monochrome image.  This is always an interesting point since manufacturers often use the same terms but use varying values for saturation, sharpness, contrast, etc. to impact how the jpeg image is presented.  I generally leave my P7100 in Standard Mode.  I shoot both raw (.NRW) and JPEG files but, I like the option to process the raw files for shots I find better than others or want to use for some reason.  Otherwise, I just use the jpeg to mail to friends, etc.  Here is a series of shots of the same subject taken on an overcast day.

These are Standard and Neutral on top and Vivid and Monochrome on the bottom.  If you click on the images, you will see a full size view where the comparisons will be easier to make.  Of course, you won’t see any color differences in the monochrome image but it servers two purposes.  By eliminating color, you can see the relative brightness of various parts for example the various shades of green in the Sabal Palm can be compared to the blues of the sky.  This isn’t very scientific, of course, but I find it helpful.

The other purpose for taking the monochrome image was to allow me to play with Capture NX a bit.  When I load the raw monochrome image into Capture NX, I can change the Picture Control used at capture.  Yep, I can retrieve the color pixels as well and store the image in the same Standard, Neutral and Vivid shown above.  Capture NX also provides two other picture controls at the camera setting level, Portrait and Landscape.  So, just for fun, I saved the Monochrom Raw image at Standard and Vivid, (top two pictures) and Portrait and Landscape(bottom two pictures) to see what happened with that.  Here they are.  You can see the differences in these too.

This was just a fun experiment.  On a normal day I sent the camera to Standard but, if it clouds over, I use Vivid.  If I decide to process from raw, I remove whatever control was used and replace it with neutral.

P7100 JPEG Engine / Raw Conversion

A question was raised about the effectiveness of the P7100’s internal RAW conversion process or JPEG engine. Since I normally shoot RAW plus JPG Basic, I thought I would see the effect of the internal raw conversion vs. Nikon Capture NX and Lightroom 3. I used a center crop of a picture I had taken of a couple of Mottled Ducks the other day. So, here they are.  Click on any of the images to see a larger size.  These shouldn’t be regarded as absolute comparisons because all have been resized for the blog.

Capture NX
LightRoom 3 Capture NX processed

The top left picture here was straight from the camera basic jpeg cropped and resized using Faststone.  I used faststone to crop and resize all the images.

The picture at the top right was the P7100 NRW file opened with Capture NX and saved immediately as a jpeg.  No processing was performed on the image.

At bottom left was the same NRW file converted to jpeg using lightroom 3.  Again, no processing.

The bottom right picture was slightly processed with Capture NX.  A small increase in saturation and unsharp mask was all that was added.

Sunset tonight

Rainy season in SW Florida brings us beautiful, colorful sunsets.  Not much to say about them.  This one was taken near the Punta Gorda Boat Club in Gilchrist Park.

Enjoy

Weekly Photo Challenge – Movement II

I already entered this challenge when it was announced using a picture which showed movement through blur.  But, you can also show a picture of movement by showing objects which logically are in motion yet, the captured moment shows them as still.

The positions of the horses, riders and bulls all speak to motion yet all of it is frozen.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Movement

This one was completely serendipity in action.  I had arrived at an Eagles Nest where I wanted to take pictures of the two young in the nest.  My camera was handy but, set up for some still shots I had been taking earlier.  I saw the adult coming in to the nest, popped the camera up and started shooting.  Unfortunately or fortunately, as the case may be, I was in aperture priority mode at f14 and ended up with a pretty low shutter speed.  I panned with the landing eagle and ended up tracking reasonably well, but there was plenty of subject motion involved too.  This is the result:

Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting Moment

Fleeting moment did you say?  Well, here is part of a fleet of racing sailboats on Charlotte Harbor in Punta Gorda FL.  They are converging on a mark and it’s a close race.  There is another fleeting moment in the picture, a pair of brown pelicans framed by the masts as they fly by.
